Your refrigerator is the centre of your kitchen, and a little TLC can help it to run at it’s best. You can expect your fridge to last for 13-15 years depending on use and care of the appliance, and proper maintenance can positively impact it’s lifespan. Here are a things you can do:
Clean the condenser coils
These are the large coils located at the back or underneath your fridge, depending on your model. They remove heat from the fridge and freezer. When dirt and dust accumulate on them, the fridge becomes less efficient and therefore increases energy consumption, and can lead to costly repairs down the road. Unplug the fridge and use a bristle brush and a vacuum to clean off the coils. Twice a year is best.
The seals, or gaskets, around the fridge and freezer doors are designed to keep the cool air in and the warm air out. If the doors are not sealing properly, the fridge runs longer to maintain desired temperature. Clean the seals every 6 months with an all-purpose cleaner and wipe dry. If you see any gaps or cracks in the seal, contact a service depot to have them replaced.
Level the fridge
If your fridge isn’t level, then the doors may not shut and seal properly, losing valuable cold air. Place a level on top of the fridge and, if necessary, adjust the levelling legs with a wrench until the fridge is slightly above level. This will allow the doors to to shut slowly and tightly when closing. You can check this once every 6 months-12 months.
The fridge temperature should be kept between 32 & 39 degrees fahrenheit and the freezer at 0 degrees. You can help your fridge keep it’s ideal temperature by cooling cooked foods before placing them inside. You can also purchase a fridge safe thermometer and place it in a visible area inside the fridge to make sure the fridge is cooling properly
Water filter replacement
If you have a fridge with an ice & water feature, it’s important to change your filter every 6 months. Water filter prices range generally from $30-$60 and can be purchased from us here at the shop. If we don’t have yours in stock, it can be ordered and received within a day or two here at our location for you to pick up. If you need a little incentive to shell out for a new filter, consider this: water drawn through a dirty filter is often dirtier than than before it was filtered!
These easy steps can help your fridge run at peak performance. However, If your fridge is more than 20 years old, it’s really time for a new one. Older models can can use up to 3 times the electricity of newer, more energy efficient ones. You could be saving a few hundred dollars a year!
